HAPPY CAMPERS

I had a fantastic time at Malouf’s Campground

I had a fantastic time at Malouf’s Campground. I rode into the campground, which is a little untraditional but is definitely within reach of a 1-day cycle ride of New York City, so that’s awesome. Clean and friendly campground. Well run, great hosts, great view and right on the hiking trails. Excellent choice if you’re looking to get out of NYC for the weekend or even a weekday trip! The local town of Beacon is fun to visit too.

I am still replaying the fond memories of my time there

I have almost recovered from my stay on the mountain, and I am still replaying the fond memories of my time there (and climbing that mountain up and down!). So, I want to thank all of you for your hospitality and the overall way you have organized the place to make it so accommodating. Everything I experienced there, from that initial cold Bud to the rustling of the wind through the trees at my campsite, will remain fond memories of my time on the mountain. Thanks for all of that. I hope I can visit again some time.

I am so glad I tried Malouf’s Mountain Campground!

I am so glad I tried Malouf’s Mountain Campground! I love camping but I live in NYC in a tiny studio, so I don’t have a car and have nowhere to store a ton of camping gear. Dick picked me up from the train station and my trip was seamless-no car needed and they had all the gear I needed, as well as just being friendly and helpful folks. It was the most peaceful and beautiful trip I’ve had in a long time. Thank you!

This is a rare great combination

This is a rare great combination of what could be thought of a deluxe camping (they offer tents, shelter and a warm water shower) with the feeling that is down to earth and close to nature. The place is clean and affordable, the owner and staff are friendly and helpful, and the shuttle service for city-folk who do not own cars is excellent.

Our gear and food was at the site on arrival!

I was a skeptic. I’m an experienced wilderness camper, backpacking guide, and I don’t really like campground….but my wife likes a few extra comforts. This was a perfect compromise. I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our platform site. The site felt remote, was really clean, and was equipped with everything. Our gear and food was at the site on arrival! No heavy pack to carry. Dick, Tracy and Brian were awesome, and they try very hard to ensure that you are comfortable. We had a great experience, and will definitely return with friends. I highly recommend Malouf’s. Great for the inexperienced or the veteran woodsman.

The service at this place is awesome.

The service at this place is awesome. We had a group of ladies who wanted to do a camping trip with limited gear and minimal camping experience. They provided courteous, helpful service leading up to our reservation and throughout our weekend adventure.

I did not want to leave

It had been 4 years since our last visit, but not without regrets! We hated that we were not able to return. I say this because the grounds and bath house center still look as clean and comfortable as the last time we stayed. I think this will sum up our experience… On our first trip, we were booked for 3 nights. My wife had never been camping before, by the next morning, she asked if we could book for the 4th night. Well, this being our third trip, we decided we weren’t ready to go and added an additional night. We will be back and again and we will probably see you there because you will be too! I’m actually going to try to plan solo return trip before this season’s end, I did not want to leave.

If you’re planning a larger group trip I would say this is ideal

Camped here last weekend and had a wonderful time. Hikes ranged in length and for avid hikers, there’s lots of interesting ups and downs and varied terrain plus great scenic payoffs.

And the bathhouse is THE CLEANEST I’ve ever experienced at a campsite. You’ll be answering nature’s call in a bug-free, cedar-wood, private bathroom instead of stalls (when you’re not peeing during your hike of course). Showers don’t have a single speck of dirt and have ample room to change without being in public view or getting your clothes wet.

We were in a larger group split between 3 sites– 2 primitive and 1 platform. If you’re planning a larger group trip I would say this is ideal if some have tents because then you can all cook together with the convenience of the “chow box” including pots and pans as well as 2 gas burners. Super convenient for breakfast oatmeal/eggs that are a pain to cook on an open flame. Tip: a 6-person group over 2 nights didn’t finish all the wood provided so don’t over-order.

Staff were very friendly and helpful in giving local tips on hiking and things to do in town (just a cab ride away if you’re interested)

Totally worth it!

Totally worth it! I went with a friend who was new to the hiking/camping scene and this was the best experience we could have asked for. The whole process was painless and extremely convenient.

We were picked up on time at the Beacon station and Dick was incredibly helpful. He dropped us off at the trail and went over the route with us before we ventured on our path (We did Site 3 in about 5 1/2 hours, which was about 4 hours of hiking). It was awesome to know that our heavy pack and food was waiting for us at the campsite!

The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The bathrooms, sinks and showers were immaculate! While we brought snacks and drinks, most of the food was purchased from the staff. The prices were affordable and the food worked out great (vacuum sealed burgers & dogs, baked potatoes already wrapped in foil, eggs and ham).

If you want to do something more authentic than car camping, this is an awesome option. You get to do an incredible hike without being stuck to a loop, and you don’t have to worry about hauling around most of your gear and food to setup a campsite. Will definitely do it again!

I don’t leave reviews very often but I had such a good, relaxing time at Malouf’s I had to.

I don’t leave reviews very often but I had such a good, relaxing time at Malouf’s I had to.

First off, 5-stars all the way.

-Everyone running the place and helping out was awesome, friendly and courteous (Dick, Tracy, Sheila and Brian, I’m looking at you.)
-It’s a perfect mix of the outdoors and comforts of the indoors.
-The wash areas, bathrooms and showers were all in immaculate condition.
-I bought food to cook and it was tasty.

THE HIKE IN:
They clearly write on their website and say when making a reservation that it’s a 30-minute hike to the camp. I think the change in elevation might be a little much for some people but I’m not sure how they can be so surprised by this as I’ve seen in a few negative reviews. If you have difficulty getting up four flights of stairs it might not be for you.

AT THE SITE:
I stayed in a primitive site that comes with a picnic table, fire pit with grill and is covered with a fly tarp. The site was in perfect order when I got there and I was at least 40 yards from the closest site. This was really nice. I was looking at other camp sites in the area and on Long Island and it looked like you set up your tent in a parking lot.

THE CAMP:
I was only there for a day so all I got in was a 3.5 hour hike up to the top of a ridge… that I’m not sure exactly what it’s named. The trail was a bit challenging at times since it gets pretty rocky but I was able to get up to the top without much trouble. The view was awesome. Highly recommend.

If you visit you should come down to the picnic area for a beer and say hello to your fellow campers and the crew. I learned a lot about Revolutionary War-era trails and muddin’ tires in a very short time. Good times.

Also, for those afraid of getting stranded on a trail, lost, attacked by woodchucks, there’s 4G cell service (I’m on T-Mobile) covering the whole mountain. You can breath the fresh air and still go on the Internet to look at photos of cats who talk funny.

So, that’s it.

Awesome people. Great accommodations. Nice and secluded.

I want to thank you for a really great weekend. The group had a fantastic time and we were all really impressed with the campsite and amenities. Thank you for making our trip such a seamless and enjoyable experience. We look forward to seeing you again later in the summer!

The best camping experience my husband and I have had

Malouf’s Sunset Campground was without exaggeration the best camping experience my husband and I have had. Coming from Brooklyn, we traveled by train and were greeted by Dick and the shuttle bus which dropped us at the trailheads before a breathtaking 2 1/2 hr hike to the camp sites.
